Principals Report Week 9 Term 2
Dear Parents and Carers,
Emergency Evacuation Drill
The emergency evacuation drill that was conducted yesterday ran very smoothly. All students, staff and visitors were assembled on the oval meeting point within just over 5 minutes of the alarm sounding which was an excellent result. The students were very responsive to teacher instructions and moved calmly and quietly to the assembly point. Thank you to everyone involved for your cooperation with this drill.
Semester One Student Reports Available Today in COMPASS
Yesterday afternoon your child’s Semester One Report was made available in the COMPASS portal for you to view. This report will have assessment on your child’s Engagement with Learning and also the Key Learning Areas of the curriculum.
As you are aware, there are no comments included in this report card. However we are offering parent/teacher interviews next week on Monday and Tuesday. These interviews will run for 10 minutes each.
During the meeting our teachers are open to discussing any aspect of your child’s education. There will be a focus on the learning behaviours and academic areas in which your child has shown growth, as well as areas of the curriculum and learning behaviours identified as areas for further growth and improvement. It is also important to discuss what is needed next to enhance your child’s learning and collaboratively identify some goals for your child to achieve in Semester Two.
Please see the information in the messages in our COMPASS portal on how to make a parent teacher booking. Be aware that online bookings are live now but do close at 12pm on Friday this week.

Book Week - Week Five of Term Three (19th-23rd August)
This year the Children's Book Council of Australia’s Book Week Theme is
Reading is Magic!
I would like to alert all Rosary families that this year’s Book Week falls in Week Five of Term Three (19th-23rd August). Book Week is an annual celebration that is the highlight for all students! Each week next term, there will be an intensive literature study on one of the Children's Book Council of Australia shortlisted picture books. By the end of next term, students will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite and find out what the Australian judges have voted as theirs – an interesting discussion in itself! As part of Book week celebrations, I will be asking the students to come dressed as a book character ensuring that they have the book the character relates to with them on the day. I am happy to assist with any book choices. The children will be asked to come to school in their costumes on Friday 235th August. Please be mindful of the suitability of props e.g. swords.
Our annual Book Fair will be held in the Library August 20th -23rd inclusive. There will be a large selection of books to purchase for your children with 50% of sales being returned to the Library in books and resources.
Chess has concluded for Term 2 and will resume for Term 3 on Tuesday 23rd July and conclude in Week 9 (Tuesday 17th September). Congratulations to all students for their enthusiasm and participation.
Registration is open to any students from Years 1-6 who would like to attend. The cost is $100 per term and the session runs from 3.10-4.30pm. Parents are asked to collect their children from the front of the school promptly at 4.30pm. Additionally, if students are enrolled in Osh Club one of their staff members will collect from Chess Club and take them back to the hall. If you are interested in registering your child/children please contact the Front Office via email and I will contact you prior to the commencement of Chess next term.
Regards,
Jodie Dawson
Last Thursday, RPS sent a team of eight girls to the Northside Netball Gala Day. Freezing conditions never deterred the girls from convincingly winning all five of their games over the course of the day. Thank you to Janelle Kelly, coach and manager, Heidi Wright, Tamara Box and Shalan Scholfield who provided endless encouragement and support all day! A very special mention to Janelle’s Mum and Isla’s grandmother, Kathy Ruston, who umpired all games for our girls! Kathy was in her element and we couldn’t have done it without her experience and expertise!!! Congratulations Hannah Scholfield, Isla Kelly, Indie Wright, Evie Box, Grace Goldsworthy, Mae Ramsay, Eve Andonovski and Rebecca Lynar.

How to make an appointment
If your child was seen by the School Counsellor last year and you would like them to receive support in 2023, we require you to complete a new counselling registration form. Please either contact your child’s class teacher or Greg Walker- the Principal for further information.
Similarly, new referrals and requests can be made by contacting your child’s class teacher or Greg Walker- the Principal for further information.
Parent consent for counselling continues to be required for all primary school students and will be sought and provided via email. Where parents are separated, we require the written consent of both parents. Once the referral has been received by myself- School Counsellor- I will make contact with parents on my next day at Rosary to further discuss the referral.
More about School counselling/how to access school counselling at Rosary Primary School
As part of the pastoral care program for students at Rosary, students have access to a Student and Family Counselling service provided by MaryMeadCatholicCare Canberra & Goulburn (MCCG). MCCG are contracted by the CEO to provide a counselling service to students and their families on site. There is no fee to access this service. The service offers short term counselling support (roughly up to six sessions per referral issue) to children and their families – the counsellor can also provide referrals for more complex issues requiring intensive or long term therapy/support.
The role of the counsellor is to focus on the emotional, social and educational well-being of the students. Counsellors welcome contact with students having difficulty with some part of their life, the problem does not have to be a big one. It is better to seek help sooner rather than later. Some typical
concerns that counsellors work with include: anger, anxiety, behavioural problems, low mood, family changes/separation, grief and loss, learning and educational challenges, parenting challenges, peer and other social relationships, school avoidance, stress and study skills. As well as individual sessions with students, counsellors can run groups, consult with parents and teachers and make referrals to other services and supports.
Student and Family Counsellors subscribe to a set of professional ethics that include duty of care and respect for the individual rights to privacy and confidentiality. The counsellors’ obligation is to ensure the safety, well-being and confidentiality of the student they are working with. All counsellors are mandated to report any disclosure or sign of abuse (including self-harm) or neglect to Child Protection Services. Outside of our mandated requirements, all counselling sessions are confidential and the details will not be discussed with other parties unless written consent is given by the client.
Sarah Foley- is onsite at Rosary Mondays and Tuesdays during term.
