Principals Report Week 5 Term 2
Dear Parents and Carers
Catholic Education Schools Enrolment Period Closing this Friday 31 May
We have had a good enrolment period with quite a number of families attending each of the five open school enrolment sessions. Places are still available in Kindergarten for 2025 so please enrol soon to secure a place.
Please contact the school if you have a younger sibling that is still to be enrolled for Kindergarten at Rosary for 2025. Please spread the word to people outside the school that enrolments need to be in as soon as possible for 2025, if you know they may be considering enrolling their child at Rosary.
Enrolments will still be accepted after this Friday, pending the availability of a place in classes from Kindergarten to Year 6.
Next week I will begin interviews with families enrolling their child at Rosary, with offers being made before the end of Term 2.
Aboriginal Reconciliation Week Performance
This Friday 31 June, as part of National Reconciliation Week, we will have Majeda Beatty perform for the whole school. We look forward to the performance. Here is a little bio about Majeda.
Taking you on a journey of Australia’s First Nation dreamtime through an interactive and vibrant experience, Majeda Beatty presents both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island cultures as well as sharing her perspective on being an indigenous millennial woman. She believes in the importance of cultural pride and carrying on past traditions as well as moving forward in a modern world.
Majeda is a Sydney based singer, actress and dancer who comes from a proud Wuthathi mother, her roots stemming from Far North Queensland and an African American father. Growing up she was taught the importance of her culture from her mother through movement, song and storytelling. At five years of age Majeda started performing in schools with her family’s cultural dance group and over the years her talents have seen her perform over a wide variety of mediums. In recent times she has become well known for her starring role in the ABC3 Drama series ‘Ready For This’.
Thank you to Miss Rachel McKerrow, our Aboriginal Contact Teacher, for booking this performance and her ongoing work with our students.
Good luck to students running in the North Canberra/Gungahlin Cross Country Carnival this Friday
Good luck to the students from Rosary competing in the North Canberra/Gungahlin Cross Country Carnival on Friday 31 May. This is a great opportunity for them to run against the better runners from other schools and districts. I hope each runner does their best and enjoys the event. Thank you to Mrs Fryar for taking the squad to the event and for her continued organisation of sport at Rosary.
CLAIM THE DATE
Rosary 2024 School Photos - Thursday 13 June (Week 7)
Please be aware of this date coming up and if possible ensure that your child attends school on time for the series of class photos that will start at 9.00am this day. Students will need to be in full winter school uniform on this day, regardless if this is one of their sports days. Teachers will adjust school sports days or lessons this week if needed. Thank you.
Semester One (Mid-Year) Reporting Period Approaching
Students are working hard in their classrooms and teachers are beginning to assess students on recent work prior to moderating and grading students for their Semester One Report. Parents and carers will receive their child’s report card in Week 9 this term, on Wednesday 26 June.
Claim the Dates:
You will be invited to attend a parent teacher conference in Week 10, on either Monday 1 July or Tuesday 2 July. An online booking sheet for times will be released in advance of this time.
Across our Catholic Primary Schools the 2024 Semester One report will have overall grades awarded for each subject as well as indicators of performance in each strand of some core subjects, like English, Mathematics and The Arts. There will be no written comments included in the report this Semester, but they will be included in the 2024 Semester Two Report. This makes the upcoming parent teacher conferences very important to discuss your child’s progress in the first half of the year.
Although the times mentioned above are our formal whole school meeting times, please remember that you can make an appointment with your child’s teacher at any time of the year to discuss their academic progress or social skills/development.
Wishing everyone a wonderful week ahead.
God Bless
Greg Walker

How to make an appointment
If your child was seen by the School Counsellor last year and you would like them to receive support in 2023, we require you to complete a new counselling registration form. Please either contact your child’s class teacher or Greg Walker- the Principal for further information.
Similarly, new referrals and requests can be made by contacting your child’s class teacher or Greg Walker- the Principal for further information.
Parent consent for counselling continues to be required for all primary school students and will be sought and provided via email. Where parents are separated, we require the written consent of both parents. Once the referral has been received by myself- School Counsellor- I will make contact with parents on my next day at Rosary to further discuss the referral.
More about School counselling/how to access school counselling at Rosary Primary School
As part of the pastoral care program for students at Rosary, students have access to a Student and Family Counselling service provided by MaryMeadCatholicCare Canberra & Goulburn (MCCG). MCCG are contracted by the CEO to provide a counselling service to students and their families on site. There is no fee to access this service. The service offers short term counselling support (roughly up to six sessions per referral issue) to children and their families – the counsellor can also provide referrals for more complex issues requiring intensive or long term therapy/support.
The role of the counsellor is to focus on the emotional, social and educational well-being of the students. Counsellors welcome contact with students having difficulty with some part of their life, the problem does not have to be a big one. It is better to seek help sooner rather than later. Some typical
concerns that counsellors work with include: anger, anxiety, behavioural problems, low mood, family changes/separation, grief and loss, learning and educational challenges, parenting challenges, peer and other social relationships, school avoidance, stress and study skills. As well as individual sessions with students, counsellors can run groups, consult with parents and teachers and make referrals to other services and supports.
Student and Family Counsellors subscribe to a set of professional ethics that include duty of care and respect for the individual rights to privacy and confidentiality. The counsellors’ obligation is to ensure the safety, well-being and confidentiality of the student they are working with. All counsellors are mandated to report any disclosure or sign of abuse (including self-harm) or neglect to Child Protection Services. Outside of our mandated requirements, all counselling sessions are confidential and the details will not be discussed with other parties unless written consent is given by the client.
Sarah Foley- is onsite at Rosary Mondays and Tuesdays during term.
Rosary Rugby - Matt Giteau Cup Report
Year 3/4 Matt Giteau Cup Report
Years 3 and 4 students played in the North Side Matt Giteau Cup on Thursday 16 May. Finishing 2nd on the table after three games, they unfortunately lost to Mother Teresa, missing out on a spot in the final.
The children showed great team spirit, welcoming and playing alongside 5 Palmerston Primary School students who had never played rugby before.
George A and Luca were great leaders on and off the field, for the new players and the year 3 cohort. New to the game, Zac and Henry (Year 4) impressed the coaches with their defensive and ball running skills. Vince dusted off the cobwebs and slotted back in, having not played rugby since last year.
The six year 3 students who have a few years’ experience playing rugby showed they could mix it with the year 4 students. Massimo also gave it a go and didn’t look out of place on a Rugby field.
Well done!
Coaches – Shaun Pavier and Adam Pyne
Year 3 - George, Henry, Harriet, Lincoln, Massimo, Oscar & Zach.
Year 4 - George, Henry, Luca, Zac & Vince
Year 5/6 Matt Giteau Cup Report
Rosary Year 5/6 competed in the Matt Giteau Cup for two days over the last two weeks. The first week they won the Northside event with outstanding footy, resulting in an undefeated run to the final which they won comfortably. Winning the Northside competition entitled the team to compete for the title against sides from South Canberra and some country areas.
Once again the team performed admirably, winning the pool stage but running out of steam in the finals, albeit only being beaten narrowly. It was a fantastic performance over the two days and along with some great footy, the boys displayed exemplary sportsmanship and bravery against some well drilled and big teams. All the boys contributed to the success of the team and should be very proud of how they represented themselves and their school over the two weeks.
Special mention to the boys who aren’t part of the normal Saturday team – they came in, picked up the rules well (and quickly) and did a great job. Thank you also to Miss McKerrow and Mrs Pangallo for providing support and enthusiasm over both days.
National Kids In Space Design Project 2024- Year 6
This week in STEM classes, Year 6 students were introduced to the National Kids In Space Project 2024, facilitated by Makers Empire. Rosary was one of nine schools in the ACT to be chosen to take part in this challenge.
The challenge is:
Design something that could help astronauts work and live in space, or, use space
technologies to design something that will help solve a problem here on Earth.
Students will use maker instructions to design and create a solution. This form of learning supports students’ critical, creative, and design thinking abilities. Students will use the Makers Empire App to create a 3D design and will use our new 3D printer to print their designs. We are very lucky to have received a 3D printer from Makers Empire (to keep) as part of our participation in this project.
The top designs will showcase their idea at the ACT Showcase in September. The winner of the ACT Showcase will then take part in the National Showcase in Adelaide later in the year.
Good luck Year 6 students!
