Principals Report Week 5 Term 1
Dear Parents and Carers
I hope your parent teacher conferences have been beneficial this week in providing a snapshot of how your child has started the 2024 school year. The purpose of these meetings, in a non-reporting term, is to discuss how your child is engaging in their classroom and to support them further for Term 1 and Term 2. Thank you if you have been able to attend.
Year 6 Student Leadership Badge Presentation
Last Friday the Year 6 students were presented with their leadership badges. They have made a really positive start to the year and have begun working with their Kindergarten buddies and undertaking other roles around the school.
We look forward to each student taking up the leadership opportunities presented and uphold the values and expectations of Rosary School. I’m confident they will demonstrate how they can contribute to the life of Rosary School.
Year 6 Mass and Camp Coming Up
The busy start to the year continues for our Year 6 students and teachers as they prepare for their mass in the parish church at 10.00am this Friday and also their 3-day, 2-night camp to Berry, NSW, next week. They will attend the NSW Sport and Recreation camp there and participate in a range of activities. Mrs Hillsdon and I will be attending the camp, along with their teachers, Mrs Mara Pangallo and Mr Chris Evans.
Annual Swimming Carnival Success
Our annual swimming carnival was held at Dickson Pool on Monday. It was a wonderful carnival and well attended by our students. There was a full schedule of events as many students entered 50m and 100m races this year. The day ran smoothly thanks to the hard work of staff and our volunteers. The students also enjoyed the novelty events and splash park to gain water confidence or have some fun between events. Thank you to Mr Read and Mr Hinds for supervising these events.
As mentioned we had a great turn out of volunteers for the event and the carnival would not be possible without their help. I would like to offer a huge thanks to our sports coordinator, Mrs Elizabeth Fryar, for her preparation and calm running of the event on Monday. I know she spent hours working on the carnival and many people commented on how successful the day was.
We had some unexpected entrants into some of the events - a local family of ducks! They decided it was time to cool down with a little swim, strategically changing lanes as required and dodging swimmers in theri events. This kept us all amused!
We will present the place ribbons and winning house trophy soon. Some students will be selected to go on to represent Rosary School at the North Gungahlin district level carnival to be held on Wednesday 3 April at the AIS pool.
2024 Curriculum Coaching Underway
Over the last week our teachers and staff have been working with our curriculum coaches and leadership team to embed our High Impact Teacher Practice in all classrooms. In particular we have focussed on English and Mathematics. We have looked closely at our InitiaLit Program in Kindergarten to Year 2 and our Spelling Mastery Program in Years 3 - 6. Spelling Mastery started this week. In 2023, our InitiaLit and Spelling Mastery programs showed improved student results in our school and across the Catholic schools system. These positive signs are very encouraging for our staff and students.
We are currently focussing on our engagement norms and classroom engagement to ensure that each student can access the curriculum through classroom lessons, and when required through targeted intervention programs like MiniLit Sage and MaqLit. Our work is informed by the regular assessment carried out by teachers on a daily basis. The teachers continually check each student's understanding of the concept or skill being taught and then review and revise what they need to know.
Wishing everyone a great week ahead.
God Bless.

Hello from the School Counsellor ……and important information about how to access School Counselling
Hello lovely Rosary Primary School families! My name is Sarah Foley and I have been part of the MaryMeadCatholiccare Student and Family Counselling team since 2006.
I am a registered Psychologist with a passion for working with children, young people and their families. I have previously worked in marketing, community based aged care, crisis counselling and the homelessness sector.
In my school counselling work -I provide short term client centred support to children and their families drawing from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Strengths based, Mindfulness and Trauma Informed approaches in a developmental context. For more complex issues I also provide referrals and information/parent consultation. I am at Rosary all day Mondays and Tuesdays during each school term.
How to make an appointment
If your child was seen by the School Counsellor last year and you would like them to receive support in 2023, we require you to complete a new counselling registration form. Please either contact your child’s class teacher or Greg Walker- the Principal for further information.
Similarly, new referrals and requests can be made by contacting your child’s class teacher or Greg Walker- the Principal for further information.
Parent consent for counselling continues to be required for all primary school students and will be sought and provided via email. Where parents are separated, we require the written consent of both parents. Once the referral has been received by myself- School Counsellor- I will make contact with parents on my next day at Rosary to further discuss the referral.
More about School counselling/how to access school counselling at Rosary Primary School
As part of the pastoral care program for students at Rosary, students have access to a Student and Family Counselling service provided by MaryMeadCatholicCare Canberra & Goulburn (MCCG). MCCG are contracted by the CEO to provide a counselling service to students and their families on site. There is no fee to access this service. The service offers short term counselling support (roughly up to six sessions per referral issue) to children and their families – the counsellor can also provide referrals for more complex issues requiring intensive or long term therapy/support.
The role of the counsellor is to focus on the emotional, social and educational well-being of the students. Counsellors welcome contact with students having difficulty with some part of their life, the problem does not have to be a big one. It is better to seek help sooner rather than later. Some typical
concerns that counsellors work with include: anger, anxiety, behavioural problems, low mood, family changes/separation, grief and loss, learning and educational challenges, parenting challenges, peer and other social relationships, school avoidance, stress and study skills. As well as individual sessions with students, counsellors can run groups, consult with parents and teachers and make referrals to other services and supports.
Student and Family Counsellors subscribe to a set of professional ethics that include duty of care and respect for the individual rights to privacy and confidentiality. The counsellors’ obligation is to ensure the safety, well-being and confidentiality of the student they are working with. All counsellors are mandated to report any disclosure or sign of abuse (including self-harm) or neglect to Child Protection Services. Outside of our mandated requirements, all counselling sessions are confidential and the details will not be discussed with other parties unless written consent is given by the client.
Sarah Foley- is onsite at Rosary Mondays and Tuesdays during term.
2024 Parent WhatsApp Group - have you joined yet?
The 2024 Parent WhatsApp Groups are now in full swing! Have you joined yet?
The WhatsApp groups are the main method of communication between Class Contacts and the parents of each year-level. They can be used to notify parents of important dates and reminders, to coordinate the year-level Rosary fundraising event and other ad hoc things as they arise (for example, organising parent dinners or sporting teams, etc). Parents can also use the WhatsApp group to ask questions as needed.
All families were sent an email on 1st February 2024 notifying them of their 2024 Class Contacts and providing a link to the 2024 parent WhatsApp group for their year-level. Parents with students in multiple years received more than one email. Should parents wish to join the WhatsApp group, they can access the link via that email, or via the notice in the My News section of their student's Compass dashboard titled 'Year X parent group - Class Contact and parent WhatsApp Group Information'.
2023 Parent WhatsApp Groups
All 2023 Parent Whatsapp Groups have now been deactivated and all members removed. Parents may still notice the inactive 2023 group in their WhatsApp 'Chats' list. Parents may delete or archive the2023 group if they do wish for it to remain visible on their WhatsApp 'Chats' list.
