Principals Report Week 2 Term 1
Dear Parents and Carers
Welcome Sarah Foley (School Counsellor)
This week we welcomed our new CatholicCare Counsellor, Sarah Foley. Sarah has had the chance to meet staff and familiarise herself with Rosary school. Sarah comes highly recommended as she is experienced and has worked in a number of different school settings. Sarah’s days will be Monday and Tuesday each week. I wish Sarah well and know she will be an asset to our school community.
2024 Meet the Staff Night and Community BBQ
We had a good turn out for the Meet the Staff Night and our BBQ on Tuesday evening. Thank you to everyone who could make it to visit classrooms and have a talk to staff about the new school year. Families had the opportunity to network and catch up too. I would like to offer special thanks to our Year 6 parents and carers who ran the BBQ and also to paul Mogan, our maintenance officer, who did the set up and packing up of our BBQs and tables.
The next opportunity to formally see your child’s class teacher/s will be in Week 5 this term, Tuesday 27 March and Wednesday 28 March. These will be parent/teacher conversations where you can book a suitable time to see how your child has started the school academically and socially.
Of course, if you need to discuss a matter with any of our staff please make an appointment at any time of the year. Good communication is key to each child’s success.
Safer Internet Day
This week included the Safer Internet Day. This is a global initiative to raise awareness of online safety issues. The eSafety Commissioner leads the initiative in Australia. We educate people about online safety risks, like online abuse, how to be safe online and where to go for help.
This Safer Internet Day we're encouraging you to take three simple actions when approaching online safety: Connect. Reflect. Protect.
Connect safely by keeping apps and devices secure and reviewing your privacy settings regularly.
Reflect on how your actions online may affect others or your safety.
Protect yourself and others by visiting eSafety.gov.au to find out how to stay safe online and report online abuse.
By doing these things and sharing the Connect. Reflect. Protect. message, we can work towards making every day a Safer Internet Day.
Thank you to our Teacher Librarian, Mrs Jodie Dawson, who discussed the importance of being internet safe and aware during her library lessons this week.
Rosary Sporting Stars
Three students from Rosary were selected to represent the ACT in Futsal. An amazing achievement.
The boys played U8’s for ACT at the National Club Futsal Championship 13 - 16 January 2024 held in Sydney.
The defence, goal scoring, great team players and amazing sportsmanship were a stand out with the three boys.
They played with pride and passion and never gave up. The coaches and staff were very proud of the calibre of Futsal they played.
Congratulations to Luka Modric, Axl Ravanparsa and Hunter Lonsdale who were the boys who were selected.
I wish you all the best for the week ahead. I hope some of you may be able to attend our Opening Year School Mass at 10.00am tomorrow, Friday 9 February.
God Bless
Greg Walker

Whole Day Absences via Parent Portal
Whole Day Absences
If your child is absent from school for a whole day or longer, please submit details of the absence via the Parent Portal. This should be completed within 7 days of the absence. There is no need to adjust times for whole day absences.
If your child will only be absent for a partial day, the absence will be recorded as your child is signed in or out via the kiosk at the front office. You do not need to add an early pick up or late drop off via the Parent Portal.
Unexplained absences for your child will be displayed on your homepage when you log in to Parent Portal.
If an unexplained absence appears that you believe to be incorrect, please send an email to the front office for investigation.
Welcome to all our new families and existing families to a fun and exciting year.
Housekeeping
All students are expected to bring a library bag to and from school to protect our valuable and expensive books. Even a short stint in a school bag with a cold drink bottle with condensation can render a book destroyed. Any bag is fine.
Library Days Term 1
Library days are as follows:
Monday- Kinder Nagoya, Kinder Paris
Tuesday - 4 Dublin, 4 Rome, 3 Cairo
Wednesday – 2 Osaka, 2 Barcelona, 5 Panama, 5 Washington, 3 Bangkok
Thursday – 6 London, 6 Athens, 1 Hague, 1 Vienna, 3 Casablanca.
Book Selections
Over the last two weeks, I have been encouraging the students in Year 2-6 to really think carefully about what they are borrowing. We have discussed the 5 Finger Test which is all about encouraging students to pick a book that will engage them. Students select a random page in a book they are interested in borrowing and read the page. Depending on the errors made on that page depends on the suitability of the book. If books are slightly tricky, we encourage them to be read with/by a parent or guardian. Students in Yrs 2-6 have taken a bookmark home to share this strategy with you.
Students in Kinder and Year 1 didn’t miss out! They received a bookmark to help remind them of the importance of caring for our books!
Feel free to contact me at any time to support your child/ren in their reading selections!!
Book Covering
If there are any parents, grandparents or guardians that are confident book 'coverers' I would love for you to let me know so i can get any newly catalogued books into the hands of the students over the course of the year! Thank you in advance!
Book Club
Ms Sandy Bigna, one of our RPS mums, has generously offered to co-ordinate Bookclub again this year. Thank you so very much Sandy!!! Brochures will come home in the coming week for families to look at. All orders are then placed and paid for online by a family member. Sandy then disseminates the orders to the students' classrooms when the books arrive at school.
Safer Internet Day
On Tuesday 6th February it was ‘Safer Internet Day’ this day is an initiative to continually raise awareness of online safety issues. This year’s theme is
Connect.
Reflect.
Protect.
There are many resources available at esafety.gov.au and as a school community we encourage you to take some time this week to talk to your child/ren about ways they can remain safe online.
Chess Club
Chess Club has recommenced for this term! Chess Club operates every Tuesday afternoon from 3.10pm-4.30pm. We are looking forward to welcoming back our coaches, existing students, and new students for a fun and exciting year. Any queries about joining the Rosary Chess Club should be directed to the Front Office. I will respond to new parents by phone.
Rosary welcomes our new school counsellor for this year, Sarah Foley.
The school counsellor, is available every Monday and Tuesday.
You can refer your child for counselling by contacting the school by phone or email.
You will be asked for your consent for your child to access the service. In the case of families where parents are separated, consent of both parents is normally required. If this is difficult for you please feel free to discuss this with the counsellor.

Class Contacts and Parent WhatsApp Group Links
All families will receive an email this week, specific to each year-level, notifying them of their 2024 Class Contacts and providing a link to the 2024 parent WhatsApp group for their year-level. Parents with students in multiple years will receive more than one email.
The WhatsApp groups are the main method of communication between Class Contacts and the parents of each year-level. They can be used to notify parents of important dates and reminders, to coordinate the year-level Rosary fundraising event and other ad hoc things as they arise (for example, organising parent dinners or sporting teams, etc). Parents can also use the WhatsApp group to ask questions as needed.
Please note, it is requested that the parent’s name is shown in the WhatsApp profile (or at least first name and initial) so that the Class Contact can monitor who is in the group. The rules associated with the Rosary WhatsApp groups are included in the ‘Group Description’ section of the WhatsApp group.
The year-level WhatsApp groups operate on an annual basis. The 2023 WhatsApp groups will be closed on 19 February 2024.
