Last Friday was the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This feast reminds us of the great sacrifice that Jesus made in giving his life for all of humankind and of the unconditional love that is held for us all. It also reminds us to share our love with all others. Below is a prayer you may wish to share as a family to give thanks for the many blessings we enjoy.
We are all looking forward to Walkathon day tomorrow. It is forecast to be a clear day. There will be checkpoints along the way that will have stocks of fruit and water but the children are encouraged to bring their own water bottle. Thank you in advance to all the wonderful parents who are assisting us in a variety of ways on the day – we couldn’t hold this event without you!
I wish everyone a happy and safe holiday break and look forward to seeing the children again when school resumes on July 22 for the start of Term Three.
Just in case you missed the email:
On the Rosary School Calendar, a Performance Assembly was scheduled for the last day of term. However, due to the Walkathon having been brought forward to the final day of Term 2 instead of Term 3, the Performance Assembly will be re-scheduled to a suitable date next term. We will advise the students of this change and will also advise parents, in plenty of time, once the date has been established.
With my thanks for your attention to this calendar change and for your understanding.
Year 6 Camp 2020
From next year, Year 6 students will attend the NSW Sport and Recreation Camp at Berry. It will be a two-night camp instead of a three-night camp as the travel time to and from the camp is significantly reduced. By staying closer to home, we can fit in the same number and type of activities as at Milson Island and we also keep the costs down for parents. The closer proximity to Canberra also allows for easier collection of a child should there be any reason (such as illness) for the child to return home prior to the end of the camp. We are looking forward to a wonderful Year 6 Camp experience next year in a different and beautiful location.
Many thanks to Mrs Sandy Vincent for organising the chess competition participation and to Mr Tim O’Brien for supervising13 students from across the school at the ACT Junior Chess League Open Primary Interschool Chess Event which was held at Majura Primary School on Tuesday. The students had their serious ‘game faces on’ but were gracious in their sporting behaviour and in terms of representing Rosary with excellent manners and conduct. Thanks are extended to all the students from Years 2 to 6 for their participation and efforts on the day.
This is just a gentle reminder, given the approaching holiday period, to take the time to talk with your child about his/her role in helping to keep safe at all times. Please discuss the importance of knowing where your child is at all times and discuss strategies for dealing with an approach by a ‘stranger’ and how the attention and help of the public can be gained in a situation where he/she might feel unsafe. A good rule of thumb is: It’s OK to talk to a stranger in the presence of mum/dad/carer but not if one of these is not present. Please also reiterate that nothing is ever too awful to discuss with an adult who loves and cares for the child; that it is important to let the adult know any information and how they are feeling so that the adult can help to keep the child safe.
Please be aware that there has been a confirmed case of chicken pox within our community. A sibling of a student in our junior primary has been affected. If your child develops any symptoms please consult your doctor.
Information regarding Chicken Pox can be found at this link.
Could you please return your child’s robe ASAP, ensuring that it has been washed and ironed.
Confirmation Preparation Evening and Commitment Mass
Early next term, there are two important commitments for Year 6 students wishing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. To be eligible, students must be baptised Catholics and have already received the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist.
Confirmation Commitment Mass – 28 July, Holy Rosary Church @ 10:00am
These events are an important part of the preparation for the Sacrament and the candidate and at least one of their parents (or supporting adult) should attend both. If you are unable to make either one of these, could you please contact Fr Kieran to arrange an alternate date.
On October 19, Rosary Primary School will be hosting the annual Catholic Schools Netball Carnival. Schools receive this opportunity once every 20 years. A carnival of this size will require a commitment from the entire Rosary community.
This is an in an invitation to all parents to attend the first meeting for the Catholic Schools Netball Carnival being hosted by Rosary Primary School. Please note the change of date for this initial meeting.
When: 6:00pm Wednesday 24th July (Week 1 Term 3)
Where: School Library
As this is a major fundraising event for our school, it is essential that as many people as possible attend. An agenda will be emailed two days before.
We are asking for expressions of interest for the following committees.
Catering / Show bags
Netball teams and draws ( score sheets, data entry, medals and certificates)
Sponsorship and management of volunteers ( secure sponsors and organise rosters for volunteers)
Vendor management ( secure vendors, electrical requirements, power and floats)
To clarify roles and responsibilities a second meeting will be held:
When: 6:00pm Wednesday 7th August (Week 3 Term 3)
Where: School Library
We look forward to seeing as many of our community as possible at these meetings to ensure the success of the carnival.
Thank you to the people who have already indicated that they will be available to assist. Your support is greatly appreciated.
This year the Childrens’ Book Council of Australia’s Book Week Theme is Reading is my Secret Power. The CBCA has been celebrating Book Week annually with Aussie kids since 1945! We would like to alert all Rosary families that this year’s Book Week falls in Week Five of Term Three. Book Week is an annual celebration that is the highlight for us, as your Teacher Librarians, and for all students! Each week next term, there will be an intensive literature study on one of the Children's Book Council of Australia shortlisted picture books. By the end of next term, students will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite and find out what the Australian judges have voted as theirs – an interesting discussion in itself! As part of Book week celebrations, we will be asking the students to come dressed as a book character ensuring that they have the book the character relates to with them on the day. We are happy to assist with any book choices. The children will be asked to come to school in their costumes on Friday 23rd August. Please be mindful of the suitability of props e.g. swords.
Our annual Book Fair will be held in the Library August 19-22 inclusive. There will be a large selection of books to purchase for your children with 50% of sales being returned to the Library in books and resources. There will also be weekly activities to celebrate this literature fest, which your children will no doubt tell you all about as they occur!
Have a wonderful winter break and thank you to all families who have made efforts to return outstanding books!

The National Gallery of Australia is hosting a fantastic exhibition of Indonesian contemporary art. Last Saturday I joined one of the special opening events and listened to talks from four of the artists. I can highly recommend visiting the exhibition, which is free, if you have some time over the coming school holiday.
